Yamunanagar, April 30
The police on Monday arrested 18 youths in connection with an attack on a Dalit colony in Model Town Karhera village of the district on Saturday night. They were sent to judicial custody.
Sources said some of the arrested youths were not from the village and some of them didn’t belong to an upper caste.
The attack was triggered by the elopement of a Dalit youth and an upper-caste girl of Model Town Kharhera village on April 24.
The police have booked nine persons by name and 40 to 50 unidentified persons.
Sources said the girl returned to her house on Sunday.
Some of the accused alleged they were innocent. “Some of the arrested youths, including me, visited villages in Yamunanagar district to mobilise support for Maharana Pratap Jayanti, which will be celebrated in Safidon on May 20,” said Amit Thakur of Kurukshetra’s Tangor village.
The police, however, said no innocent person was arrested. — TNS
