Hisar, June 5

The Department of Higher Education (DHE) has discontinued subjects and courses with poor student strength in 60 government colleges across the state.

Issuing the admission guidelines for academic session 2018-19, the department listed 119 subjects/courses which would no longer be continued as the number of students pursuing them was less than 20.

Mathematics, Sanskrit, economics, Bachelor of Sciences (BSc) in Computer Science/Information Technology and Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) are among the subjects/ courses suspended by the department.

Mathematics has been dropped from 21 colleges, while economics and Sanskrit would no longer be available in 11 colleges from the coming session. Similarly, job-oriented courses like BSc Computer science/IT, BBA, BCA, Bachelor of Mass Communication (BMC) have been taken off from 21 colleges, while BCom has been dropped from five colleges. Eight subjects will no longer be taught at the Government College in Barwala of Hisar district.

The college teachers said the department’s decision would affect the academic atmosphere in these colleges. “It will be a huge disadvantage for the students, if subjects like mathematics, economics and job-oriented courses are not available in colleges,” said a university teacher.

General Secretary of the Haryana Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisation Prof Attar Singh said they had taken up the issue of restoring courses/subjects with the state government. “Instead of such regressive measures, the government should provide quality education to the students. The move contradicts government’s commitment to providing jobs to the youth,” he said.
