Karnal, May 31

The police will develop road stretches in different blocks of the district as safe commuting zones. The stretches will be equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to ensure safe travel and reduce the number of fatalities in road accidents.

Superintendent of Police Surinder Singh Bhoria said that in the first phase, the 10-km road stretch between Nilokheri Kali Mata Mandir and Samabahu village in Nilokheri block on National Highway-44 would be developed as a safe zone. This would be followed by four more stretches in the second phase, he said.

The SP said, “We will earmark those stretches where no accidents took place in the last 30-days. The illegal openings on these stretches will be closed and roads will be re-engineered wherever required.”

Karnal DSP Rajiv Kumar said that on the first earmarked stretch, two PCRs would be deployed to check rash driving. Alcohol sensors would also be installed to curb drunken driving and ambulances deployed for immediate medical care. SHO Butana will keep a vigil on this stretch.

The SP said an action plan had been prepared for vulnerable areas in Nilokheri to check eve-teasing. These areas include both the bus stands on NH-44, Gol Market, railway station and Polytechnic College Chowk. The cell phone numbers of police officials from SP to SHO would be displayed at these places and cops would also maintain vigil in civil uniform.

Students of various schools and colleges would also be made aware about the traffic rules. Besides, NGOs, road safety organisations, sarpanches, women police volunteers would also be roped in to ensure the success of the project, he said.
