Chandigarh, June 29

In a shocking case, Chaudhary Devi Lal University in Sirsa “sacked” a woman account assistant from service after she lodged a complaint of sexual harassment against her boss, an officer in the university.

The complainant, who worked in the university for the past over one year through an outsourcing agency, was not allowed to mark attendance after her complaint.

The officer against whom she had lodged her complaint with the university authorities wrote to the outsourcing agency that the branches where she had worked all these months had given reports that she did not know her work.

The woman has now approached the police with her complaint, though no FIR has been registered so far.

Meanwhile, Bajrang Lal, president of the Non-Teaching Employees Union of the university, has demanded the registration of a first information report (FIR) against the officer.

The union, which held demonstration in the university today and on Thursday, has threatened to intensify the agitation in case no FIR was registered till July 5.

In her complaint given to the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Vijay Kayat, through the Registrar Dr Aseem Miglani on June 25, the woman had accused the officer of “indecent” behaviour and making her sit in the office for long hours after the office time and also on holidays.

She also alleged that the officer threatened to remove her from job if she objected to his ways.

Before this, the woman, along with her some other colleagues, had lodged a similar complaint against the officer on February 22 this year.

The Vice-Chancellor confirmed having received the woman’s complaint and said that he had sent it to the Women’s Complaint Committee of the university for a probe into the allegations.

He said action under the law would be taken once the committee submitted its report.

Regarding the woman’s removal from service, Dr Kayat said that based on reports received from branches where the complainant had worked till date, the officer concerned had written to the outsourcing agency on June 21 itself to dispense with her services as she did not know her work.

Sirsa DSP (Headquarters) Ravinder Sinver said the woman had met him on Thursday with her complaint and he had forwarded it to the Women’s Police Station for action.

Sunita Rani, SHO of Women’s Police Station, however, said she had not received any such complaint so far.
