The Bharatiya Kisan Union (Haryana) on Monday charged a section of unscrupulous arhtiyas and rice sheller owners with opposing direct cash payment to the bank accounts of farmers.
BKU president Gurnam Singh Charuni told The Tribune that those opposing the transparent payment module were actually supporting corruption. He said that the state authorities should strictly implement the direct payment transfer.
"It is well known that a section of traders indulges in malpractices during the paddy purchase season. Bogus papers are prepared to show non-basmati varieties of paddy purchased from Bihar and other states at very lower rates as purchases from Haryana farmers," Charuni alleged.
He said that arhtiyas exploited rice growers on the flimsy ground of quality of foodgrains. If the direct payment mode is strictly implemented, farmers would not be forced to sell their produce at low prices, he added.
The arhtiyas’ associations at various grain markets had suspended work on Sunday in protest against the state government decision to credit money to the bank accounts of farmers, bypassing them.
“Arhtiyas are the backbone of the Indian farming sector and a majority of farmers are dependent on them for financial support. Farmers mortgage their property or land to get a loan from mandi traders as they cannot afford to repay loans,” he said.
