Karnal, May 30
Infuriated over a raid by UHBVN employees two days ago and registration of an FIR against residents of Shekhpura village, they decided against paying electricity bills.
They said UHBVN officials had assured them of holding a “khula darbar” on Wednesday to resolve their electricity-bill-related problems, but none of them turned up, forcing them to take the decision.
On Monday, six UHBVN employees were reportedly assaulted and held hostage for more than two hours by the residents after they went to the village to check power theft. The police later rescued them from a chaupal.
Surinder Sangwan, a village resident, said UHBVN employees entered the houses by scaling walls.
He said the UHBVN should get the FIR cancelled.
AK Raheja, UHBVN Superintending Engineer, admitted that “khula darbar” was scheduled in Shekhpura but, in view of the tense situation, it was decided to resolve problems related to electricity bills from the power utility’s office.
“The decision against paying bills is an attempt to mount pressure on the UHBVN,” he added.
