Gurugram, June 4

Even as Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has promised to permanently station a task force of 1,000-plus night patrol personnel in Gurugram to check the rising crime graph there, the city seems to have already turned into a den of vehicle lifters with an average 13 thefts reported everyday.

The menace has created panic among residents with many societies roping in private security personnel to check such incidents.

Around 2,000 vehicles have reportedly been stolen from Gurugram this year so far. The number was 1,461 during the first five months in 2017. Clearly, there has been a 32 per cent spurt.

Most of such cases are reported from Sector 50, DLF-II, Sector 53, New Colony, Sector 14, Sector 9, Sohna City and Manesar police stations areas.

Sources say most of these gangs make use of WhatsApp to advertise the sale of stolen vehicles. Investigations reveal that many gangs of vehicle lifters have their own fleets of CNG autos to ferry their members.

Vehicles lifted from Gurugram are generally taken to Mewat for disposal and further sale/purchase. Residents of many villages in the district, it is claimed, are known to be dependent on vehicle thefts for their sustenance. Youth of these villages are allegedly trained in dismantling stolen vehicles. They then sell vehicle parts to their “trusted” spare part dealers.
