Jhajjar, May 31
Several farmers in Jhajjar are up in arms against the state government over non-procurement of their mustard crop. They accused the agency of making excuses though they had brought their produce to the mandi on the scheduled date.
“I waited for procurement of my mustard crop till the evening of April 16. The procurement agency assured me of buying the produce the next day, but it was still unsold,” said Ranbir of Sulodha village.
Abhimanyu, another farmer, said his mustard crop was not procured on April 24 even after submission of documents and weighing of produce.
Gaje Singh, a commission agent, said a large quantity of mustard brought by around 25 farmers was lying unsold at his shop in the mandi.
“Farmers had brought the produce to the mandi on the scheduled date, but the agency did not procure it citing a variety of reasons,” he stated.
Narender Kumar, president of the Commission Agents Association, Jhajjar, said a large number of farmers were compelled to visit the mandi and government offices in connection with the sale of produce.
“In many cases, the agency refused procurement on the scheduled date on the pretext of inclement weather conditions,” he said. “It assured farmers that their produce would be procured in the subsequent days, but it was not done, leaving them high and dry,” he said.
He demanded that the state government should reinitiate procurement so that farmers got a fair price lest they had to sell their crop to private buyers at lower rates.
Surender Choudhary, Hafed District Manager, said mustard had been procured as per schedule and farmers were given ample opportunities to sell their produce.
“It needs to be inquired who the farmers levelling false allegations are. The mustard crop of all 227 villages mentioned in the schedule had been procured as per schedule,” he asserted.
Several farmers met Jhajjar SDM Rohit Yadav on Thursday and demanded procurement of their unsold mustard produce.
“The farmers were told that no village in the district had been left out of procurement and no further procurement was possible,” he said.
