The headmistress of Government High School in the district’s Darwa village was booked on Thursday on the charge of abetting the suicide of a boy after he was denied re-admission to Class X.
Sunny (17) of Darwa village passed Class IX from the school this year. But his name was struck off as he missed school for a few days. The boy belonged to the Sikligar community.
On Wednesday, he and his mother, Ajmer Kaur, went to the school for re-admission. They met the headmistress, Manjeet Kaur, but she refused to re-admit Sunny.
“We returned home dejected. After sometime, we went again to the school and requested the headmistress to re-admit my son, but she remained adamant,” Ajmer Kaur claimed.
In the evening, she said, Sunny started vomiting. He was admitted to Trauma Centre here. He died on Thursday.
“The headmistress harassed and insulted my son. This played on his mind and he consumed poison,” Ajmer Kaur claimed.
On the complaint of Sunny’s father, Gurbachan Singh, a case was registered against Manjeet Kaur under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the IPC.
Meanwhile, a committee under the chairmanship of District Education Officer (DEO) Anand Chaudhry with deputy DEO Suresh Kumar and Block Education Officer, Jagadhri, Jai Singh as members visited the school on Thursday and conducted the preliminary inquiry into the matter.
The committee’s report said the headmistress should have re-admitted Sunny, when he turned up in the school on Wednesday, sources said.
The report further said it was a case of “gross negligence” on the part of the school headmistress. Thus, she had violated the Haryana Civil Service (Conduct) Rules, 2006.
