Ambala, May 31

Former vice-president of Ambala Cantonment Board Surender Tiwari on Thursday alleged that a contract related to construction work at the PWD rest house in Ambala Cantonment had been terminated by the PWD (B&R) under pressure from Health Minister Anil Vij.

Surender Tiwari, a councillor, claimed, “The minister terminated the contract to cause financial loss to me. I have been in this profession for over two decades and never saw contracts being terminated.”

He said the March 14 deadline for the completion of the work was missed due to VIP visits, including that of the President of India and the CM, marriage of health minister’s niece and a change in lift design.

Tiwari claimed the department had imposed penalty on him and he had also replied to notices on April 24.

He alleged the minister was miffed at him because he had led a protest by Brahmin Sena against the HSSC and held meetings with MP Rattan Lal Kataria, MoS Nayab Saini and BJP spokesman Sanjay Sharma.

BB Kamboj, XEN, said, “The contract was terminated because Surender Tiwari failed to complete the work in time. Several projects are under way in Ambala Cantonment area and the minister reviews all the works on regular basis.”

Meanwhile, Vij refuted allegations. He said, “The action has taken by the department because he failed to complete the work despite being served notices. He was arrested in April last year on charge of assaulting councillor Ajay Baweja and also expelled from the party. Since then he has been approaching me for a compromise.”
