Rewari, June 30

The police on Monday claimed to have cracked the mystery behind the death of the nine-year-old girl, Bhumika, by arresting her father Sandeep and grandfather Raj Singh on the charges of killing her.

The police said Sandeep, with the help of his father, had strangled his daughter to death on June 25 as she insisted to go to her maternal grandfather’s house in Dongra Ahir village (Mahendragarh) where she had been residing for the past several years.

The death became suspect two days ago when Bhumika’s maternal grandfather, Raj Kumar, lodged a complaint with the police and demanded probe into her death after suspecting something fishy in the matter.

Raj Kumar, in his complaint, said Sandeep did not inform him about Bhumika’s death and buried her clandestinely. The case should be investigated to find out the exact cause of her death, he said.

Taking note of the complaint, the police exhumed Bhumika’s body from the cremation ground in the village on Thursday and sent it to the Civil Hospital for postmortem.

“Sandeep, during police investigation, disclosed that his in-laws had insulted him when he went to Dongra Ahir village on April 29 to bring Bhumika to Bithwana. Later, Bhumika kept insisting on returning to Dongra Ahir, hence he strangled her to death and buried the body without informing her maternal grandfather,” said DSP Satpal Yadav.

He said Raj Kumar had married off his daughter Kusum Lata to Sandeep in 2002. Lata died in 2007 following some illness. Bhumika’s elder and younger sisters are living with his father in Bithwana village, while she had been staying at her maternal grandfather’s house in Dongra Ahir village for the past several years, he added.

“Sandeep and his father were arrested by the Model Town police station last night. They will be produced before the court on Sunday,” the DSP added.
