Faridabad, June 30
Over 200 Congress activists laid a partial seize to the toll on the Faridabad- Gurugram highway here on Saturday. The protesters were demanding withdrawal of the hike in toll rates made effective from Friday. They forced free run of vehicles for about 20 minutes, before they were persuaded to disperse by the police.
Led by HPCC spokesperson Vikas Chaudhary, the protesters condemned the hike of 25 per cent effected by the toll plaza operator from June 29 and sought its withdrawal. The protestors, who reached the plaza around 2 pm, squatted near the toll booths and raised slogans. Alleging that the present government had crossed all limits, Chaudhary said that this toll point operated under the supervision of the Haryana PWD department had come as a major bottleneck for smooth commuting between the two important cities of state. Describing the charging of Rs 37.50 for round trip for small vehicles as a direct loot he said as the toll operator evaded to provide the change of 50 paise coin, thus collecting additional money illegally from a large number of vehicles. “The party would soon launch a state wide agitation if the toll rates were not decreased,” he said.
Describing the recent intervention of the Haryana’s Industry Minister to clear the traffic jam at Badarpur Toll Plaza here on June 4, as a cheap publicity stunt, the Congress party leader asked where was the minister now when the rates had been hiked by 25 per cent and there was no relief from the traffic jams at such points. “The toll hike will only burden the middle class,’’ said Sumit, a daily commuter, who demanded removal of all toll plazas in the NCR.
The toll rates for small vehicles( private cars, jeeps and wagons) has been hiked to Rs 25 from 20 for single journey, while for return journey it will be Rs 37.50 from the earlier charge of Rs 30.
