Karnal, May 30
An inmate committed suicide in Karnal jail on Tuesday night. The deceased has been identified as Avtar Singh (55), a resident of Gurdaspur in Punjab.
His family members alleged negligence on part of the jail authorities and demanded inquiry.
As per information, Avtar Singh was a truck driver and was arrested by Panipat police on May 25 with poppy husk. He was shifted to Karnal jail on May 28.
“He was a drug addict and after shifting him to Karnal jail, was sent to the rehabilitation centre on May 29, where he committed suicide by hanging himself with his turban cloth in the corridor,” said Sher Singh, jail superintendent.
He, however, refuted allegations of negligence on part of the jail employees and said a judicial inquiry had already been started.
Guljar Singh, brother of the deceased, said the jail authorities had admitted that he was a drug addict, then why was he not given proper care and allowed to roam freely.
He also alleged that the Panipat jail authorities did not allow him to meet his brother despite visiting the jail several times.
Surinder Singh Bhoria, Superintendent of Police (SP), said an inquiry was being conducted under the supervision of a judge.
