Suspecting retrenchment, around 150 employees on contract in the ESI Medical College and Hospital here staged a demonstration here on Friday to seek job security from the authorities.
The employees expressed apprehension that their services could be terminated as the new contractor, who would supply manpower from July 2, might replace them.
“We submitted a memorandum to the DC, seeking intervention,” said Akhilesh, working on contract for two years.
He pointed out that the staff, including nurses and paramedics, had already cleared the exam. He said they had now been asked to undergo the exercise again.
He said the new contractor had pasted a notice that those who failed in the exam would not be retained. He said the ground was being created to retrench many employees.
He said the contractor was changed every year and the jobs of all employees were at his mercy as the Employees State Insurance Corporation had outsourced manpower supply.
An employee, identified as Megshyam, had committed suicide last year after he reportedly fell prey to depression over the fear of unemployment.
Admitting that the contractor would be changed, Dr Asim Das, college Dean, said the contactor was authorised to employ staff, but performance evaluation was considered for retaining or changing staff.
